Biography

Deanna became Chief Executive of the UK Retail Bank in December 2005, taking the helm at one of the largest retail banks in the UK, with nearly 30,000 employees, serving some 15 million customers through contact centres, online banking and more than 1,700 branches.

In addition to her role as Chief Executive of the UK Retail Bank, in November 2009, Deanna became Vice-Chair of Global Retail Banking (GRB). Working with GRB Chief Executive, Antony Jenkins, Deanna’s remit as Vice-Chair is to help drive global excellence across GRB’s markets and to develop strategies for success.

 

From 1985 to 2005, Deanna held several senior management positions at Washington Mutual.

In September 2007, Deanna was named Britain’s Business Communicator of the Year by the British Association of Communicators in Business (CiB) and in October 2009, was chosen by U.S. Banker magazine as one of the top 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking.

Deanna serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington USA and is also a charter member of the Advisory Council for Amara, an organisation that partners with birth, foster, and adoptive parents to create and support stable, loving homes for vulnerable children.

Biography

Jane was appointed Chief Executive of NS&I in September 2006. Trained as an investment manager, she spent the first part of her career managing pension funds with Mercury Asset Management before moving to BZW where she held a number of senior management positions in their asset management division to become Chief Operating Officer at the time of the creation of Barclays Global Investors.

She then became Chairman and Chief Executive of Barclays Stockbrokers and Barclays Bank Trust Company before moving to Reuters as President of their newly created global division, Services for Asset Managers.

Jane has acted as a plc non executive director and pension fund trustee. Currently she is Chair of ACE, the association of agency and NDPB chief executives, and a member of the HMRC capability review team.

Biography

Alan Cook took up the role of Managing Director of Post Office Ltd in March 2006 with the brief to re-vitalise the business and return it to profitability by 2011.

Alan, 56, joined Post Office Ltd from National Savings and Investments where he was Chief Executive. Prior to that time, he was at Prudential Assurance Company where he was Chief Operating Officer for UK and Europe.

Alan is a Non Executive Director of the Financial Ombudsman Service and has recently been appointed as a Non Executive Director of The Department for Transport. Until recently, he was a Member of Council at the Institute of Financial Services and previously was Vice Chairman of the Board of the University of Bedfordshire.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2004 he was granted the Freedom of the City of London and is a member of the Worshipful Company of Insurers. He was awarded a CBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours List.

Biography

Nick Clegg is MP for Sheffield Hallam and Leader of the Liberal Democrats. He studied at Cambridge, Minnesota and College D’Europe before training as a journalist. Clegg then worked as a development and trade expert in the EU, sat as an MEP (1999-2004), lectured at Sheffield and Cambridge universities, and was elected as an MP in 2005. In Parliament Clegg was quickly appointed Europe spokesperson and later Shadow Home Secretary, a role in which he spearheaded the Liberal Democrats’ defence of civil liberties and promoted a new approach to cutting crime. He was elected Leader in December 2007 and has pledged to double the party’s number of MPs within two elections. Clegg is married with three young children.

Biography

Philip Hammond has been a Member of Parliament representing Runnymede and Weybridge since 1997. He previously fought a parliamentary by-election in Newham North-East in 1994. Philip was Secretary of the Conservative Party Health Committee and has also served as a member of the Select Committee for Environment, Transport and the Regions and the Trade & Industry Select Committee.

In June 1998, Philip was appointed to the Opposition Front Bench as Shadow Minister for Health. In September 2001, he was appointed Shadow Trade & Industry Minister with the additional role of Shadow Minister for Small Business.

From 2002 to 2005, he was Shadow Minister for Local Government. In this role Philip was responsible for developing Conservative Party policy on local government finance (including council tax), the Fire and Rescue Service and traveller management.

In May 2005, he became the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. From December 2005 until July 2007, Philip served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, when he was re-appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Biography

David Strachan was appointed as the FSA's Director – Financial Stability in April 2008.

Since joining the FSA on 1 June 1998, David has held the posts of Director of Major Retail Groups (March 2006-March 2008), Director of Retail Firms and Insurance Sector Leader (April 2004-February 2006), Director of Insurance Firms (October 2002 – March 2004), Director of Deposit-Takers (April 2001 – September 2002) and Head of Market Conduct and Infrastructure (June 1998 – March 2001). In addition, David led the work to produce the Turner Review Discussion Paper (published in March 2009) and before then David led the Enforcement Process Review (February-July 2005) which delivered its report and recommendations in July 2005.

Before joining the FSA, David spent his previous career at the Bank of England, working both in banking supervision (latterly responsible for the UK investment banks) and in the market operations areas (Gilt-Edged and Money Markets Division and Foreign Exchange Division).

Originally qualified as a solicitor and spent some years in private practice as a corporate lawyer.

Simon moved from private practice to work for Lloyds (subsequently Lloyds TSB) as an in-house lawyer before joining Bristol & West plc as Company Secretary. During his time at Bristol & West Simon took on a number of functional responsibilities for Bank of Ireland in the UK, including HR, Premises and Shared Services.

Simon joined Alliance & Leicester in 2003 as Group Secretary and became Group Secretary and HR Director in 2007. Since the acquisition of Alliance & Leicester by Banco Santander Simon has taken on responsibility for HR operational activities across Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley.

Biography

Thomas Huertas is Banking Sector Director of the FSA. In this capacity Thomas isresponsible for strengthening the FSA's risk identification and mitigation capabilities in the banking sector, improving the FSA's resolution capabilities and coordinating the FSA’s policy positions with respect to banking regulation. Effective 1 September 2009 Thomas will become Vice Chairman of the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS) and, later this year, Thomas will become a Member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. Thomas has previously acted at the FSA as Managing Director of Wholesale and Institutional Markets and as Director of

Supervision for Wholesale Firms. He has extensive experience as a banker and has published widely on banking and financial issues. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago.

Biography

Robert became chief executive of the Lending Standards Board (LSB) on 1st November 2009. The LSB is the successor body to the Banking Code Standards Board which he joined as CEO in 2006.

The LSB is the independent body that monitors and enforces compliance with the Lending Code, to which all major providers of unsecured credit and small business lending subscribe.

Prior to joining the BCSB he spent 3 years as Director General of the Money Advice Trust, a charity that provides advice to over-indebted individuals throughout the UK. In addition to running the Money Advice Trust, Robert was also a member of the Financial Services Consumer Panel and a member of the government’s Advisory Group on Over-indebtedness.

Before moving to MAT, Robert spent 26 years working for Barclays Bank and held a number of senior positions in the Large Corporate, International and Retail banking divisions, including the roles of UK Personal Sector Director and Marketing Director for the Private Banking division.

Biography

Colin re-joined NBS in 1990 in the position of Systems Development Manager joining the executive team 2 years later as AGM IT. He became General Manager of managed services in 1998, a role which encompassed IT, HR, Customer services and property services. In 2006 Colin joined the main board of the society as Operations Director with responsibility for IT, the third party Solutions businesses and the processing centre which includes the contact centres for both Member and Solutions customers.

In 1997 Colin created and became Managing Director of Newton Facilities Management Limited, a joint venture company responsible for the provision of computer systems and services to other financial organisations. Colin also formed and became MD of another subsidiary company, Newcastle Solutions, in 2004, which is responsible for the development and marketing of a range of other services provided by the Society. This has seen the recent creation of two new companies responsible for processing in-sourcing in the investment and mortgage market. Savings Solutions is currently the largest provide of managed internet savings service within the UK. Newcastle Solutions is also responsible for the development of the pre paid card service offered by NBS, an area it believes will see considerable growth in the immediate future and for which it believes itself to be well positioned.

During his time at NBS Colin has been responsible for the development the systems, support services people and processes which have seen NBS win a number of awards for innovation including awards for CRM, Internet developments and Contact Centre implementations.

Biography

Graeme Leach is Chief Economist and Director of Policy at the Institute of Directors, which he joined in August 1998. He is also visiting professor of economic policy at the University of Lincoln.

In 2006 he was appointed to the Shadow Chancellor’s Commission for Tax reform.

Prior to joining the IoD he was economics director at the Henley Centre, analysing future economic and social change. In 1998 he was awarded the WPP Atticus Award for original published thinking on futures issues.

Previously Graeme has worked as economic adviser to the Scottish Provident Investment Group and as a senior economic consultant with Pieda.

He is a frequent media commentator and in recent years has spoken at conferences in the USA, China, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Taiwan and even Zimbabwe!

In her work, Tamar draws upon her experience at The Guardian’s New Media Lab, ten years at the Henley Centre where she was a Director, and of living and working in Japan. In 2007 she established a specialist consultancy, Futureal (www.futureal.net). Futureal brings together diverse approaches to the analysis of consumer behaviour and demand, including proprietary research on consumer spending, to help companies plan and prepare for their future. Being ready for the future is not just a question of prediction, but of understanding why something happens, and therefore how it is likely to evolve.

Alan has an extensive all round understanding of Retail Banking and the current challenges and future trends facing the industry. He is currently leading Fujitsu’s thought leadership in the field of mobile payments.

Alan has 28 years experience in consulting, operational management, project & programme management, and business analysis. Prior to his career with Fujitsu, Alan was with RBS for twelve years, where he played a key role in the development of their Payments and Securities Services businesses, latterly in strategy development, M&A and post merger integration.

A senior banker by background, David Cavell is now a freelance adviser to retail bankers across the World. He has led or supported delivery channel strategy and implementation projects for clients in the UK, Europe, USA, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific regions.

In support of his work, David has conducted extensive research into best practice within retail banking. This has included the writing of a series of reports on the subjects of branch and self service strategy. In addition, he has received many invitations from across the World to speak at conferences or direct workshops.

His industry contributions include acting as an examiner for the Chartered Institute of Bankers, panel membership for the UK Banking Code Standards Board, and a membership of the General Assembly of the University of Manchester.
